What to count in the cost of a 3D print
- 1
Filament
Use the grams from your slicer, including supports and brim, and add a little for purge and failed prints.
- 2
Hardware and inserts
Magnets, heat-set inserts, screws or trays: anything that ships with the print.
- 3
Your hands-on time
Slicing, removing supports, sanding, painting and packing. The hours the printer runs alone are not labor.
- 4
Printer time as overhead
Electricity, nozzles, build plates and the printer itself wear out. Put a per-print share into overhead.
- 5
Packaging
Boxes, bubble wrap and tape per item. Fragile prints need more.
- 6
Etsy fees and shipping
Etsy takes 6.5% + 3% + $0.25 + $0.20 per sale, and the percentages also apply to the shipping you charge.
Worked example
The 3D-printed planter above, line by line
One batch makes 1. These are the example's prices (illustrative US retail); the calculator above shows the same numbers until you change them.
| Material | You buy | Batch uses | Batch cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLA filament | 1 kg for $19.99 | 140 g | $2.80 |
| Drainage tray insert | 10 each for $6.99 | 1 each | $0.70 |
| Materials for the batch | $3.50 | ||
Cost to make one
- Materials ($3.50 ÷ 1)
- $3.50
- Your time (0.4 h × $20.00 ÷ 1)
- $8.00
- Overhead ($1.20 ÷ 1)
- $1.20
- Packaging
- $1.10
- Cost to make one
- $13.80
The pricing formula
price = (cost + per-order fee) ÷ (1 − fee % − margin)
($13.80 + $0.45) ÷ (1 − 9.5% − 40%) = $28.21
Rounded up to a .99 ending: $28.99. Etsy (US) fees at that price are $3.20, and you keep $11.99 (41% margin, 87% markup) after paying yourself.
Wholesale at a 25% margin with no marketplace fees: $18.40, so a shop would likely sell it for about $36.80.
Charging shipping? If you charge $5.99 shipping per order, Etsy (US)'s 9.5% also applies to it: another $0.57 per order. Enter it in step 4 and the price for the same margin becomes $29.99.
Pricing tips
- Filament cost is grams times price per kg divided by 1000. The calculator does this for you when you pick kg for the pack and g for the batch.
- Printing several copies in one plate? Set "One batch makes" to the number of parts and enter the total grams.
- Selling prints of someone else's design? Check that the model's license allows commercial use.

Straight answers
How do I calculate filament cost for a print?
Multiply the grams your slicer reports by your filament price per kg, then divide by 1000. In this example, 140 g from a 1 kg pack at $19.99 costs $2.80.
Should print hours count as labor?
Not the hours the printer runs on its own. Count your hands-on time as labor, and cover machine time (electricity and wear) with overhead per print.
How much should I charge for a 3D print?
In this example the 3D-printed planter costs $13.80 to make, and the calculator suggests $28.99 for a 40% target margin after Etsy fees. Most of that cost is your time, which is why a cheap-to-print part can still need a real price.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Yes. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee and 3% payment processing apply to shipping and gift wrap you charge the buyer. Enter it in step 4 under "Shipping you charge per order".
